The "Reuters - Top News" feed works for me. Sometimes publishers have invalid content in their article data and a problem like this just goes away when the problem article is not in the feed anymore. Do you still experience this issue?

If so, then maybe this is caused by another feed in the same topic/folder? You can try removing them one by one until the problem goes away. Or would you let me know the feeds/ feed URLs? You can reach me at support@goodnews.click - Thanks

Thanks Chris. I am investigating. At this point I believe this is a server timeout unrelated to the domain change. I hope to be able to resolve this soon. Thanks for reporting and apologies for the inconvenience.

Daniel FranzAdminDaniel Franz (Admin, Good Noows) commented ·

That's our API's main content request method and that's where the HTTP500 occurs, yes. Considering that it usually works after 1-2 retries, it's probably a database performance issue.

I'm still looking into the actual cause of it. In order to improve user experience a bit I made the news stream refresh function just retry 3 times in case of error. This way at least you don't have to do it manually.

Daniel FranzAdminDaniel Franz (Admin, Good Noows) commented ·

Yep, exactly. getstream is the most important API method for Good News to work properly and unfortunately there is an increasing amount of HTTP500 responses. We are going to try to find a pattern. Could be related to the database, or server config changes for timeouts. On it. Thanks and sorry again.

I am a huge fan of openness, interoperability, and free and simple export of data (you “own”).

I am working on an export feature but the XML that’s going to be generated probably can’t and won’t be RSS, ATOM, RDF, or OPML formatted.

Since Good Noows sources are/will not only be feeds but also website captures, API-delivered content, tweet streams and, at some point, potentially anything on the web, the exported XML will probably need to have a Good Noows namespace. I don’t even know yet if every resource will have an URL.

I am going to figure something out. Maybe I can manage to develop an OPML export for the resources that fit into this.

Daniel FranzAdminDaniel Franz (Admin, Good Noows) commented ·

          Jonathan. Wrong tone.

This service is free. And we are not Google. We don't have any funding, so I'm currently working on this in my spare time, mainly fixing bugs and scaling the infrastructure. I can give you my bank account details, you transfer me ten grand, and then I can build features just for you. Until then, if you don't like Good Noows I recommend you don't use it. I also recommend not to spend an hour configuring feeds just for the purpose of exporting them later. Why would anyone do that.

To the others in this thread: I still agree that an OPML export feature is high priority and I'm still committed to developing it. As stated before, I just can't give a good estimate for this.

Daniel FranzAdminDaniel Franz (Admin, Good Noows) commented ·

Hi Isabel, and all the other voters here,

We know we need to develop an export feature. We will. Until then, please rest assured that we won't just disappear with your data. We have no plans of closing but if we ever do so we'd allow you to export your data first.

          Cheers,
          Daniel

Daniel FranzAdminDaniel Franz (Admin, Good Noows) commented ·

Nothing shippable yet, sorry. We're working on stuff that will give us this feature as a byproduct. I think we'll be finished soon.

Daniel FranzAdminDaniel Franz (Admin, Good Noows) commented ·

Hi, this is not yet possible but it's a planned feature. It's not overly high prioritized but it's simple and I'll do it soon. Most Good Noows users are somewhat non-technical and they don't even know what RSS and OPML are. The app targets this audience but also wants to be attractive to tech people (e.g. users of other news readers). So it's always a challenge to integrate such things into the UI without getting the non-tech readers all too scared. But I'll do it somehow :)

These things are caused by hick-ups in the Twitter auth. Now even if fixed the problem could persist until you clean your cache/cookies (How to https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050?hl=en ). Can you please try again and let me know if that worked.

As soon as we have managed to log you back in I recommend adding an email address and password to your Good Noows account.

Daniel FranzAdminDaniel Franz (Admin, Good Noows) commented ·

Hi Kristina. What does "not working" mean? The log in is not working? Are you logging in with Facebook? Twitter? Facebook currently reports oAuth login difficulties.

If you want to be sure to always be able to log in don't rely on a third-party service and please create a Good Noows password (in the toolbar menu that has your name). Let me know, if you still have trouble I need more information.

(Also, competitive product Google Reader was deactivated yesterday and we experience a huge amount of traffic on Good Noows. Because of this our servers could be slow or even unresponsive at times. We are working on it.)

Hi Chris, awesome, thanks for the initiative.

I’m happy to use it but can you first describe the issue that this is supposed to fix? :) Scrolling works fine on my iPad and I don’t have any other error reports on this topic. Ideally, please state iPad model, iOS version, and browser. Thanks!

Daniel FranzAdminDaniel Franz (Admin, Good Noows) commented ·

Thanks Chris. I just added the {-webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch;} to all scrollable divs. I'll work more on other touch UI improvements asap (less bg images, no hover states...)

Angel, we are working on a better UX for smaller screens. In the meantime please note that you may close the popup dialog not only by clicking the close button but also by clicking on the background - the dark overlay area around the popup.

@ "Your name": Can you please stop spreading this nonsense here. Everyone else here understands that OPML is XML. You are the only one who doesn't get it.

It would also be nice if you add your name to your UserVoice account.

The feed http://www.deweekkrant.nl/rss.php/biltsche_courant is valid XML but the URL itself is not correct (there is a slash and a pathname after a filename). So our system thinks it’s actually the feed http://www.deweekkrant.nl/rss.php
We’ll make our system more error tolerant for these cases.

The feed http://www.bnr.nl/?widget=rssfeed&view=feed&contentId=1227456 is also valid but doesn’t have any content. We are going to improve our error/warning messages to indicate and reject empty feeds.

http://www.bnr.nl/?widget=rssfeed&view=feed&contentId=1227456 has content but it looks like this:

Do you see that the description element is empty (
)? This element should have the full text or at least a line or two of the article content. Currently we don't have a way of displaying these articles in our UI. We'll work to improve this, so you can at least see the headline!

Hi Larissa, we are getting reports of Google authentication not working every now and then. Let's try to get to the bottom of this one.

                      1. I understand the Google account login works but you are taken back to the Good Noows login screen. To fix this you could delete your cookies (http://www.aboutcookies.org/default.aspx?page=2 ) and try again to log in.

                      2. You probably didn't have a Good Noows username/password (other than the Google login). When you are writing "reset the password which was successful according to the email but still haven't managed to sign in" I think you used the "Forgot password" feature with your Gmail address. You should have received an email with a link to a page where you can set a password. Did you receive that email, click that click, set a password?

                      Hope this helps.

Thank, this is a good idea, which we were considering before. I’ll leave it here for more votes.

However, there is a solution for this already. I assume you have activated the “hide articles that I read” feature. Once you read all recent articles and only really old ones are left, mark them as read, too. You don’t have to do that with each individual article. There is a “Mark all as read” button in the toolbar. Just click it once and you should end up with a clean screen. Generally articles stay only in Good Noows’s news stream as long as the publisher keeps them in their RSS feeds. So you probably won’t see extremely old articles.

                          Hope this helps?

Ok. This is definitely on our roadmap now because it's a useful but not very difficult feature. No estimate as to when we'll be able to ship this though.

After the reload, if there are more old articles, and you click the "Mark all as read" button again until there are none left, then they don't come back, right?

                          Thanks.

Hi Erik, thanks for letting us know!

Everything works fine for us. Sometimes feeds with invalid code or unescaped special characters in the content can temporarily mess up the stream. This is the only thing I can think of.

                            - Since you say “Loading” I assume you are using Good Noows in English?
                            - Did you activate/deactivate or add any sources/feeds after you signed up?
                            - Any chance you could open the Newsstand dialog and let me know which sources/feeds you have activated there?
                            - Or let me know the email address you logged in with? (you can also reach me at support@goodnoows.com)

Apologies for this. I have no idea what this could be. Would be awesome if you could help us out. Thank you.

I knew it must be an unescaped character somewhere. Thank you so much for letting us know in the first place and then getting back to me with this!!! We are going to fix this asap so you can get your apostrophe back in :)

Great idea. A bit tricky because in Good Noows the articles have different scroll heights depending on the applied visual style. But we’ll look into it. In the short term we are working on an “Mark all as read” button, which you could use after having scrolled through the stream of articles.

We just released Good Noows 3.4 - with a 'Mark all as read' button. It marks all articles read that are currently loaded in your stream. For now, you can find the button in the tolbar at the top (the X icon, same as the 'Mark article as read' icon) but I think I'll find a nicer spot soon.

All articles will be grayed out or hidden, depending on your preferences in the Settings menu.

I know this is not 'mark as read when scrolling' but I thought I'd let you know anyway.

Mitch, I'm sure you have seen the configurable visual styles. We are going to add more of them soon.

Thanks for saying this Jeff. I totally agree. When we ship this it's going to be optional. We are not trying to mimic ordinary RSS readers here. Personally I hate unread counts. I lived without them when I read my printed newspapers and hey, I can't possibly read these 587 unread items anyway... It's unnecessary pressure for me. Still, it's obviously very important for traditional feed reader users. So we are going to address it...
